Okay.
Now, you motherfuckers done pissed me off.
We went from fighting against police brutality to rewriting history of the American Southwest.
I have no fucking idea what Oñate has to do with what happened to George Floyd.
But here we are.
And yes, it always annoyed the shit out of me when my former employer would talk shit about Oñate.
And before you guys do down THAT road, yes, Max does have Native American DNA. As a matter of fact, I probably have more Native American DNA than some federally recognized card-carrying Indians. So kiss my Indio ass.
Was Oñate cruel?
If the story is true, then by today's standards yes, but compared to others at this time? No.
Again, IF the story is true.
While some see and say "Indigenous Rights", I just see the re-hashing Anglo and Dutch propaganda that sought to make the Spanish as cruel, swarthy people.
If you think the "hate" against "Latinos" started now, man, you got another thing coming.
As far as my Mexican heritage I embrace the both the Indigenous and European, it was that clash and melding of cultures that forged the Mexican identity.
We are descendants of both Indigenous warriors and Spanish conquistadores...and Mexican conquistadores.
Yea, I doubt most people know that Oñate was born on THIS side of the Atlantic, not the other.
But he is just an anchor baby, amirite?
And no, "conquering" was not easy.
Most of you all cannot drive past a Whataburger without losing your shit, yet some how men, who somehow survived childhood on this unforgiving land, and who would traverse mountains and deserts on horseback with nothing but arquebuses and swords are the asssholes?
Yea, no.
The real reason why people want this statue gone is because they realize compared to him they live unremarkable lives.
And they do not want anything to remind them how unremarkable their life is.
