My future fiance Elisa Tomatillo is giving away pizzas and knocking on doors.
Meanwhile, Claudia Ordez Perez is taking selfies with her treasurer.
On paper, Claudia IS the more experienced candidate.
But voters are not voting for pieces of paper.
You can say all you want about Tomatillo being a carpet-bagger, but if that carpet-bagger knocked on your door, while the local did not, who did you think you and other voters are gonna like more?
Then there is the narrative.
For longest time, El Paso business leaders, El Paso Times editorial board, and many others, have put a premium on the Delegation getting along.
Even if getting along meant nothing got done.
For that last few years the Delegation has been "getting along."
And now it is the City that looks dysfunctional - arena lawsuits, domestic abuse, firing a council member, and so on.
Not that Claudia is at fault for any of those things, but it is part of the Tomatillo sales pitch..."I maybe new, but with the Delegation' support they will make sure that I hit the ground running to make sure that together we can accomplish a lot more for El Paso."
What's Claudia's pitch?
"On City Council...."
You see?
I am just not seeing how Claudia wins this.
Maybe had Claudia announced first she would have been in the driver's seat, but now her campaign is going to be a response to everything that Tomatillo does.
And that is going to frustrate Claudia, and that frustration will likely show and doom her campaign.
