...you can always RUN the office.
Or that is at least how El Paso City Attorney Sylvia Borunda-Firth thinks.
And credit to her, Firth is one savvy bureaucratic operator.
Different mayors and different council and Firth is still squarely in the mix of things.
But she may have pushed her luck this time.
This whole business about the firefighters having their issues on the ballot was no accident.
Who did the City hire to negotiate with the firefighters? Chris Borunda, Firth's sister.
By screwing the pooch in negotiations with firefighters, Chris delivered for her sister.
It's no surprise that some on Council are not too thrilled by Firth. That whole she reports only to the mayor-thing bothers some on Council, which understandably so.
Firth though likes things as is.
So how do you keep thing as is? Get rid of the Council members who do not like things as is.
Pissing off firefighters is a great way to get rid of sitting Council members. The firefighters are an organized group with money, votes and sympathy.
Even though it was a move by Firth and her sister to screw up the negotiations with firefighters, did the firefighters blame them for it? Nope. They blamed Council.
Ultimately though the firefighters did not deliver the blow Firth was wanting, but they did at the very least ice City Representative Cortney Niland's mayoral ambitions*. I doubt a Mayor Niland would want to keep Firth around.
Firth ain't out of the woods yet though. Who knows what the City Charter Committee might propose or has proposed regarding the City Attorney's position within the City?
*I am sorry, but I am not calling it over for Niland. Niland can still run for mayor and win. All you need is 50+1. Yeah, I know some people would like to win with 75 percent, but you do not need 75 percent to win. Elections are not letter grade tests, they are pass/fail tests.
