I got around to thinking about UMC and the $40 million that it will "forgive" by using some creative accounting that is owed to it from the El Paso Children's Hospital.
Why not just $40 million? Why not $90 million?
And if you can book a loss of those proportions then that would mean UMC has enough or had enough money to have actually reduced the property tax rate.
You see where I am going?
If UMC can book a loss, then why can't the UMC, for that matter any other local jurisdiction like the County, not book a loss to reduce its property tax rate?
You cannot say on one hand, "We have to increase the tax rate because we need more money", when on the other hand you are throwing away millions.
Some folks think that the last Bush was reckless for cutting taxes without cutting spending, but compared to what UMC is doing, at least John Q. Taxpayer got something out of it.
Now, I am sure the UMC can explain why it would not be able to reduce the property tax rate and book that lost revenue as it is doing with EPCH, but that explanation will not be simple, and would not make sense to you at all...unless you work on Wall Street.
Think about it and ask...UMC, Commissioners Court, you name it. Ask them.
