One of the things where the Tiguas really screw themselves over when making their case is their own lack of transparency.
Now Tiguas will say that because they are a soveriegn nation they owe nothing to anyone outside their tribe (never mind the fact they think the US goverment owes them plenty despite the fact it was their own people that ran them off from New Mexico back when this was Spain).
But just because you have the right does not mean you should always exercise it.
Because the Tiguas hide behind soveriegnty (thereby not disclosing anything), the State claims that Tiguas made anywhere between $40 million to $60 million per year from gaming.
Dig through the Tiguas "Year End Reports" you will not see any numbers concerning Speaking Rock at all. Which oddly enough the Tiguas don't mind sharing all sorts of other numbers in their reports.
So we do not know if the State is right or not.
And Tiguas won't tell if you the State is right or not.
The Tiguas operate in the dark.
Again, they can, but given this town's recent history with folks dealing in the dark, does not mean they should.
